Hi, my name is John Munson. I founded Beacon Photography in 2007 and opened a studio in Winthrop Center in May of 2008. My photography services include family portraits, modeling photos, pet portraits, wedding photography, event photography and commercial photography. My studio also offers framing, image restoration, and a large gallery of local photos from Boston, Winthrop and Maine (my home state).
My passion for photography started early, as our our house was filled with my mother’s black and white photos from Morocco, Egypt and around the world. I watched her develop prints in her dark room, and started working in my own digital darkroom (Photoshop) when I was in my teens. I grew up in Maine and went to college at the University of Michigan. I started my professional career as a journalist for several local papers in Boston’s North Shore, and then worked for years as a business writer and graphic designer. Being formally trained as a graphic designer I was exposed to thousands of images over the years. I eventually started to do some freelance photography on the side, until my big sister Leila prodded me to go further with photography. After years of refining my craft, I finally launched Beacon Photography in 2007 with the goal of finding beauty and sharing it with others. I take pride in my eye for beauty and light, and my technical proficiency with the camera. My other distinguishing trait that helps make my photos stand out is the comfort level I establish with my customers, allowing them to be themselves in front of the camera. I am married to my best friend Angie, and now have two kids (Sophia who is 4 years old and Owen who just turned 1 year old).
